Long ago, when the earth was young, and only the animals roamed the land, the gods ruled from heir home in the sky. Kranius, father of the gods, gave to his children the power over each part of the earth. To his daughter Drune he gave the sky with its wind and beautiful clouds. To Drune's brother, Misundor, he gave all the waters of the earth. To his second son, Mizukun, he gave the land. Finally, to his last daughter, Esenthia, he gave the job of looking over the souls of the dead.
Esenthia was jealous of her siblings, especially her sister Drune. She had wanted to rule over the sky. Instead, she had to watch over the dead. Esenthia paced her home, a palace at the center of the earth. She walked over to a jar that floated in the center of her palace, at the exact center of the earth. She pulled off the lid and peered inside.
Inside the jar were the souls of thousands of dead creatures that once roamed the earth. She smirked as she saw the small silver spirits writhe in pain from the heat. She carefully pulled one out and set it on the table next to the jar. She sealed the jar.
Esenthia picked up another jar and opened it. Inside was red clay. She took some out and carefully molded it into the shape of a god. But it would not be a god. It would be mortal.
'Human,' she thought. "I will call it human," she said aloud. She picked up the spirit and slid it into one of the slits in the figure that was the eye. The silver soul spread through the figure and clung to it. As the clay turned to flesh, bone, and blood, Esenthia conjured a vortex that would put the male human on the surface of the earth. This human would be beautiful, and she knew it would attract the affections of her sister.
She sent the man through the swirling vortex. With ten other souls she repeated the process. Esenthia had made a tribe of humans. The first would be the leader. She closed the vortex after granting the humans the knowledge to survive. Then she sat down and let her plan move forward.
Konna opened his eyes. There was light and warmth all around him. For a moment he was afraid he was back in her jar, the flames licking his body. But there was a pleasant warmth, one that hugged his body. He sat up, marveling at his new body. He gazed at his hands, moving his fingers. Why had the goddess given him a new life?
His body was much different from the last one he had. Last life his name had been Lion. Konna had been powerful. He looked around him. There were ten others, all just waking up, all he guessed had been freed from the jar. There were five women and five men. They all had similar bodies, but with unique shapes. He looked to the sky, the vast blue dotted with white.
A voice rung in his head, as it did with the other humans. It was hers. "I have given you all the gift of life and knowledge," she said. "Make yourself a village and live life. Konna will be your leader."
The humans looked to each other as the voice faded away. Konna was the first to get to his feet. Esenthia had put in their minds the image of him. They all looked to Konna, waiting for orders. Then he spoke.
"We need shelter, food, and water," he said in a deep voice. "Do you all remember your name was in past life?"
A tall, dark haired woman was the first to speak up. "I was Snake. The most cunning of the animals."
After she spoke the others spoke their former names. There were Coyote, Tiger, Fox, Doe, Shark, Rabbit, Woodpecker, Rat, and Dog. Konna nodded and gave them all things to do.
Drune gazed down at the new creatures. They looked of the gods, but were not. Her gaze froze on Konna, the leader of the tribe. Drune felt a pang in her heart. She looked into his mind and saw what he was in his past life. Lion. One of her creations.
Drune smiled. She liked her sister's creations. She even loved the one that had once been Lion. Many days passed, as all she did was watch the tribe progress. As she watched, she focused more and more on Konna. The pang in her heart grew warm as she fell more and more in love with him.
The next day Drune entered the village and sought out Konna. She found him in the forest, hunting deer. Konna saw her approach and bowed at the sight of the goddess of the skies.
Drune knelt down and looked into his eyes. She told him of her love for him and left without another word.
Esenthia could feel what her sister felt, and knew that it was time for her to make her next move. She smiled. Revenge is sweet. Somehow, she knew, she had gotten father to give her the sky. Esenthia opened another vortex. She stepped through it and appeared outside the village of the humans.
Esenthia walked into the village. There were six tents made by animal skins stretched over poles to make cones. The one in the center was obviously Konna's. She strode over to it and ducked through the entrance. He was there.
Konna looked up at her, gaping at the sight of the great goddess. With a cruel smile, Esenthia picked Konna up by the throat and squeezed the life out of him. The soul slipped out of his mouth and she picked it up, taking it with her back to her home.
Drune saw everything that happened. She wept for her dead love. Her tears swelling the clouds and making them rain down upon the animals and humans below. It rained and rained for months as she mourned. When the earth grew cold her tears froze and became snow.
Once the earth warmed again Esenthia took pity on her sister and sent the spirit of Konna to her. For the summer months, Konna and Drune lived together happily, until during the winter, when Esenthia would take Konna back and Drune would mourn once again.
